What Is Shelton’s Summer Scholars Program?
Summer Scholars is an intensive literacy program using Sequential English Education (SEE)—a multisensory, structured language approach based on the Orton-Gillingham method, which is approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as an evidence-based dyslexia intervention.
🔍 Key Features:
- Focus on remedial reading, writing, and spelling
- Uses auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning methods
- Small group sizes for individualized instruction
- Delivered by trained paraprofessionals under faculty supervision
Who Should Attend?
This program is ideal for students who have:
- Diagnosed or suspected dyslexia
- Language-based learning challenges
- Difficulty in decoding (sounding out words)
- Struggles with spelling and encoding
- Reading fluency or comprehension challenges
- Written expression delays
- Phonological awareness or auditory processing difficulties
If your child has been recommended for intensive literacy support or is not progressing in a traditional classroom, Summer Scholars may be the right fit.

What Students Receive
Each child enrolled in Summer Scholars receives a personalized, three-hour daily experience that includes:
🧠 Small Group Instruction:
- 2 hours/day of intensive SEE-based literacy tutoring
- Led by trained Shelton paraprofessionals
- Supervised by Shelton faculty
👂 Auditory Discrimination Training:
- 1 hour/day focused on sound processing and phonemic awareness
- Conducted in small groups
The instruction is both rigorous and nurturing, ensuring students feel challenged, supported, and empowered.
Benchmarking & Placement
All new students must complete benchmark testing prior to the program to ensure correct placement and targeted instruction.
- Returning students do not need re-benchmarking unless there’s been a change in learning needs.
- Session 2 is open only to returning Summer Scholars students due to its intensity and pacing.
What About Younger Students (Under Age 7)?
For children under 7, we recommend enrolling in Shelton’s Summer School Academic Morning Classes instead.
These classes are:
- Taught using the same SEE curriculum
- Less intensive, more developmentally appropriate
- Ideal for building early foundational literacy skills
Our team is happy to consult with families to determine the best fit for younger students.
